The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Azure Migration Lead to support a large-scale enterprise VMware-to-Azure cloud migration program. This is a hands-on technical leadership role responsible for leading migration execution across a portfolio of VMware workloads while working closely with migration engineers, application owners, infrastructure teams, network teams, and other technical stakeholders.
The successful candidate will bring strong hands-on experience with Azure infrastructure, VMware-to-Azure migrations, Azure Migrate, Azure Site Recovery (ASR), networking, Infrastructure-as-Code, scripting, and wave-based migration execution.
This is an initial 6-month contract supporting a phased cloud transformation program with strong potential for continued work through subsequent phases.
Key Responsibilities
-
Lead end-to-end VMware-to-Azure migration execution, including discovery, assessment, replication, test failover, cutover, validation, and post-migration activities.
-
Own migration delivery across assigned application and infrastructure workloads and ensure migration-wave commitments are achieved.
-
Assess workload complexity and determine appropriate migration patterns and technical approaches.
-
Provide day-to-day technical leadership to migration engineers, reviewing work, resolving blockers, and taking ownership of complex migration scenarios.
-
Configure and operate Azure Migrate and Azure Site Recovery (ASR) or comparable replication/migration technologies.
-
Plan and execute migration cutovers, including pre-cutover validation, communications, rollback planning, and post-migration verification.
-
Troubleshoot migration, infrastructure, networking, and connectivity issues.
-
Work directly with application owners, infrastructure teams, network teams, and technical stakeholders on dependency mapping, access requirements, migration readiness, and change-window planning.
-
Develop and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code using Bicep and/or Terraform.
-
Develop migration and automation scripts using PowerShell, Bash, and Azure CLI.
-
Contribute to migration runbooks, technical patterns, automation, and lessons learned across migration waves.
-
Lead technical stand-ups, migration planning, and lessons-learned sessions.
-
Clearly communicate migration status, technical risks, dependencies, and blockers to stakeholders.
-
Mentor migration engineers and help establish reusable migration practices across the broader program.
Required Experience
-
5+ years of hands-on Azure infrastructure engineering experience.
-
Experience delivering at least two production-scale cloud migration programs.
-
Demonstrated hands-on experience with enterprise VMware-to-Azure migrations, including rehost and/or replatform migration patterns.
-
Strong experience with Azure Migrate and one or more migration/replication technologies such as Azure Site Recovery (ASR), Zerto, RiverMeadow, Carbonite/Double-Take, or equivalent.
-
Strong knowledge of Azure compute, storage, networking, identity, and Recovery Services.
-
Working knowledge of the Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework and Azure Landing Zones.
-
Experience executing wave-based migrations, including testing, validation, cutover, rollback, and post-migration support.
Azure Networking
Strong working knowledge of:
-
VNets and subnets
-
Network Security Groups (NSGs)
-
Route tables
-
Hub-and-spoke architectures
-
ExpressRoute and VPN concepts

Engineering & Automation
-
Production experience with Terraform and/or Bicep.
-
Strong PowerShell and Bash scripting capabilities.
-
Experience with Azure CLI.
-
Experience working within structured ITIL/change-management environments, including formal change windows, rollback planning, and controlled production deployments.
Leadership & Communication
-
Experience leading small technical teams, migration pods, or paired-engineer delivery models.
-
Comfortable remaining hands-on technically while leading migration execution.
-
Strong client/stakeholder-facing skills with experience working directly with application owners, architects, infrastructure teams, and network engineers.
-
Ability to lead technical discovery, dependency discussions, migration planning, and cutover sessions.
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to clearly explain technical risks, issues, and migration decisions.
