The Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Cloud Engineer – Google Cloud Platform (GCP) / Firebase to support an enterprise Firebase platform enablement initiative within a regulated banking environment.
This is a cloud platform engineering and DevOps role, rather than traditional single-application DevOps. The successful candidate will help design, build, automate, secure, deploy, and operationalize reusable Firebase capabilities on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) that can be consumed by multiple mobile application teams.
The role requires strong hands-on expertise with GCP, Firebase, Terraform, Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), CI/CD automation, IAM/security, cloud governance, and Day 2 operations.
You will work across cloud architecture, security, networking, mobile engineering, application teams, product/marketing stakeholders, and operations to establish repeatable Firebase onboarding and deployment patterns that meet enterprise security, governance, operational, and audit requirements.
What You Will Do
Google Cloud & Firebase Platform Engineering
- Design, build, test, and maintain reusable Terraform modules for Firebase and Google Cloud Platform services.
- Support Firebase capabilities including Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), Remote Config, Crashlytics, Analytics, GA4, Google Ads integrations, and API key management.
- Build reusable Firebase onboarding patterns, templates, automation, and checklists that can be adopted by multiple mobile application teams.
- Configure and promote Firebase platform components across development, staging, and production environments.
- Integrate Firebase with enterprise cloud services, Google services, messaging/event platforms, Google Maps, Play Integrity, and related platform dependencies.
- Help establish scalable platform capabilities rather than application-specific or one-off solutions.
Terraform & Infrastructure-as-Code
- Develop and maintain modular, reusable Terraform code for Firebase and associated GCP platform capabilities.
- Apply strong Infrastructure-as-Code practices covering module design, versioning, validation, testing, release management, and environment promotion.
- Stabilize Terraform modules following initial development and prepare them for controlled staging and production deployment.
- Ensure infrastructure modules comply with enterprise architecture, cloud governance, security, naming, and environment standards.
- Maintain technical documentation covering module configuration, dependencies, deployment requirements, and operating procedures.
CI/CD & DevOps Automation
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting automated deployment and promotion of Firebase platform modules.
- Implement gated deployment workflows, validation steps, smoke testing, release automation, and deployment evidence.
- Develop and maintain YAML-based pipeline configurations and associated automation.
- Use Python or equivalent scripting languages to supplement Terraform and pipeline automation where required.
- Support QA, release validation, environment promotion, and production-readiness activities.
- Operate within formal enterprise change-management and ITSM processes.
Cloud Security, IAM & Governance
- Implement secure Firebase project and environment configurations aligned with enterprise banking standards.
- Configure and maintain IAM, service accounts, access controls, least-privilege permissions, and security policies.
- Manage API keys and related security controls, including key scoping, usage restrictions, coexistence strategies, and rotation processes.
- Ensure solutions comply with enterprise security, cloud governance, naming conventions, environment structures, networking requirements, and operating standards.
- Maintain appropriate documentation, traceability, approvals, and deployment evidence to support governance and audit requirements.
- Work with security, architecture, cloud governance, and networking teams to review and approve platform designs and implementations.
Day 2 Operations & Production Readiness
- Define and document Day 2 operational processes for Firebase platform services.
- Establish monitoring and operational practices covering usage, quotas, error rates, alerts, platform health, and service consumption.
- Develop support models, intake processes, escalation procedures, recurring maintenance activities, and operational runbooks.
- Define and support processes for Firebase SDK upgrades, API key rotation, configuration changes, and platform maintenance.
- Support troubleshooting, error handling, operational validation, and production readiness.
- Ensure solutions are supportable and can be transitioned effectively to engineering and production operations teams.
Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
- Create and maintain detailed Terraform documentation, implementation guides, onboarding documentation, deployment procedures, operational runbooks, and knowledge-transfer materials.
- Maintain accurate implementation notes, planning artifacts, ticket updates, and deployment evidence.
- Conduct documentation walkthroughs and knowledge-transfer sessions with engineering and operations teams.
- Clearly explain technical decisions, dependencies, risks, and implementation approaches to client architects and other stakeholders.
What You Bring
Required Qualifications
- Strong hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) in enterprise environments.
- Hands-on experience with Firebase platform services and Firebase project configuration.
- Strong hands-on Terraform experience, including reusable module development and Infrastructure-as-Code implementation.
- Experience designing and supporting shared cloud platform capabilities used by multiple application or engineering teams.
- Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, module promotion, release workflows, and environment management.
- Experience with Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), Remote Config, Crashlytics, Analytics, GA4, or related Firebase/Google services.
- Experience with IAM, service accounts, least-privilege access controls, API key management, secrets/security controls, and cloud security practices.
- Experience with YAML-based CI/CD and deployment configuration.
- Scripting and automation experience using Python or equivalent technologies.
- Strong understanding of enterprise cloud governance, security, naming standards, environment structures, and controlled deployment processes.
- Experience working within formal change-management, ITSM, and production release processes.
- Experience developing or supporting Day 2 cloud operations, including monitoring, alerting, quotas, error handling, support processes, and operational runbooks.
- Strong technical documentation and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with cloud architecture, security, networking, mobile engineering, application development, product, marketing, governance, and operations teams.
- Ability to work within a regulated environment requiring strong documentation, traceability, approvals, security controls, and operational handoff.
Preferred / Nice to Have
- Previous banking, financial services, fintech, or regulated-industry experience.
- Enterprise-scale Firebase implementation or platform engineering experience.
- Google Cloud certification or equivalent demonstrated GCP/Firebase expertise.
- Experience with mobile application platform services, push notifications, remote configuration, crash reporting, analytics, or marketing technology integrations.
- Experience integrating Google Cloud or Firebase services with enterprise messaging/event platforms such as Apache Kafka.
- Experience with Google Play Integrity, Google Maps, GA4, Google Ads, or related Google ecosystem services.
- Knowledge of privacy, consent, security, and governance requirements associated with analytics and marketing integrations.
- Experience transitioning cloud platforms into production support, including operational handoff, runbooks, knowledge transfer, and support/intake model design.
What Will Make You Successful
The ideal candidate is an experienced Cloud / DevOps / Platform Engineer who understands how to build reusable enterprise cloud capabilities rather than focusing exclusively on individual applications.
You should be comfortable taking Firebase capabilities from initial development through Terraform automation, CI/CD, security review, environment promotion, production readiness, and Day 2 operations.
Success in this role requires a combination of hands-on GCP/Firebase engineering, Terraform expertise, DevOps automation, security awareness, operational discipline, and strong documentation skills within a complex enterprise environment.
